Businesses advertising on the web want their sites to stand out amongst the thousands of other advertisers and web pages out there when you type a term or phrase into a search bar. With all the information out there on the internet it is difficult to see how this is done, however companies like Google and Ask.com use paid links in order to rank websites and assign them a value.

What are paid links?

Search engine companies use links to determine the value of a particular web page using link-based analysis. This is a process of measuring a website’s value by using the quantity and quality of its links to generate a score or rating. These ratings will effect where the web page will come up in search results based on its content in association with the search term or phrase. As you can see, this is very important for businesses as if their site does not show up in search results on the first or second page of search results, users will likely not even notice the site.

Common issues

For a website to be adequately scored or rated, it must pass PageRank, which is the name for the score that is given to a site based on how many votes it gets from the search engine to calculate its value. Third party web savvy developers have found ways around this system to make a page appear more important than it really is in relation to the search terms or phrases that a user has entered. Long story short a page may appear close to the top of search results that may have little value to a searcher/consumer. Companies do this by buying and selling links to be placed in web pages that are not of good quality or at least not checked for good quality.

Buying and selling links online is normal business activity for many web advertisers however when it is done with disregard for the consumer or other businesses purchased ad space, the practice is against policy and in some cases is illegal.
